CLOTH: CONTEMPORARY TEXTILES

Cloth, a small independent fabric company based in Australia, was definitely one of my favorite finds in Sydney. When my mom and I visited Sydney a few years ago, we spent hours in this boutique, rummaging through bins of remnant fabrics, each one more beautiful than the next. We found out that the inspiration for the patterns comes from a connection to nature, specifically the strength, austerity and scale of the Australian landscape. 

Cloth makes and sells the fabric as well as all rugs, furniture, wallpaper and art. They work with local crafts people the old fashioned way, slowly, one product at a time. The fabric is screen printed by the metre on a long table in a tin shed in country New South Wales. The patterns and the products are uniquely Austrlian, the perfect souvenir from the design savy city.

MOONRISE KINGDOM MAGIC

Just saw Moonrise Kingdom, Wes Anderson's new film, and the enchanted film exceeds the rave reviews I have been hearing! Every sequence is so beautifully composed. Maybe I have a better appreciation for cinematic shots due to the Blogshop class I took earlier this week, but I found myself wanting to pause and enjoy so many of the uniquely framed scenes. The colors and textures, circa New England circa 1965, are perfectly detailed. The love story is hilarious and heartfelt, with charactered nuance that prevents it from becoming too sweet or cute. I agree with the Peter Travers' Rolling Stones review that "Anderson links the everyday and the extraordinary with virtuoso artistry. By evoking the joys and terrors of childhood, it reminds us how to be alive." I want to be transported to that Magic Kingdom!
