DE YOUNG: GAULTIER PUNK

The exhibition is organized along six different thematic sections tracing the influences, from the streets of Paris to the world of science fiction, that have marked the couturier’s creative development. One of themes in the De Young Gaultier exhibition, Punk Cancan showcased street influences on the world of high fashion.

DEYOUNG: SIDEWALK TO CATWALK

The DeYoung's current Jean Paul Gaultier Retrospective is the most fascinating show I have seen in recent memory. Provocative, edgy, beautiful, sophisticated: the exhibition design mirrors the forward thinking designer's collections. The "models" are brought to life with sophisticated video projections mapped onto sculptural forms. Resembling futuristic humans, they are the perfect bodies to showcase Gaultier's revolutionary fashions. Their eyes follow you as the digital Jean Paul mannequin presents his controversial collections.

According to the DeYoung, "This dynamic, multimedia exhibition includes 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter designs created between the mid-1970s and 2010, along with numerous sketches, archival documents, fashion photographs, and video clips. For this presentation, Gaultier partnered with the Montreal-based theater company Ubu Compagnie de Création in the design of 30 animated mannequins who talk and sing in playful and poetic vignettes."

Stay tuned for additional posts in the next few days which showcase the curated runway.

SFO: BLUE SKIES

The new terminal in San Francisco International Airport gives another reason to only fly Virgin! What a beautiful sight upon arriving in such a beautiful city. It was especially pretty with a perfectly blue sky and scattered fluffy clouds...a rare site in the foggy city by the bay. This new facade mural greeted me on the first leg of our Moroccan adventure, a forecast of sunny skies ahead!

According to FlySFO, Norie Sato is the artist who created the expansive  glass mural, called Air Over Under: "Norie Sato’s imagery was inspired by our relationship to clouds and flight. Specifically, her work delves into some of flight’s inherent qualities: ephemeral, abstract, pictoral, natural, man-made, symmetrical and changeable. The artwork depicts the dual experience of being under or over clouds when flying in a plane. The combined effect is of a photographic image that, depending on the viewer’s distance or point of view, either looks clear or more abstract and atmospheric."
