ICFF: ANNE KYYRO QUINN

While running around through the NYC Convention Center, meeting talented stationery artists and Surtex pattern designers, we managed to sneak downstairs to ICFF, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. These wall coverings - produced by London based  Anne Kyyro Quinn studio - were truly a unique find.

According to the bio, "Resembling artworks more than conventional fabrics, the contemporary creations produced by the Anne Kyyrö Quinn studio are not textiles as you once knew them. Cut, sewn and finished by hand, the sculptural products are known for bold colours, rich textures and striking motifs. Anne Kyyrö Quinn’s sculptural approach has pioneered a new genre of interior textiles based on three-dimensional structure rather than smooth surface ornamentation." The dimensional, sculpted felt is both wall covering and wall art.

TIME FOR SUMMER

Happy Friday! Wanted to share a sample of my upcoming art products: bold patterns and colors galore! Enjoy this warm (or hot, if you're inland) weather and as Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, and drink in the wild air." Yay, Summer!

LACMA: MATISSE ON PAPER

It was truly an inspired discovery to walk into the current Matisse collage exhibit at LACMA. The exhibit showcases the paper cutouts of Matisse, a technique Matisse invented in the last two decades of his life, to compensate for a surgery that left him a semi-invalid. Using scissors and colored paper, the artist engaged in some of his most radical experiments with form and color, light and space.

According to the Matisse website, "Vast in scale (though not always in size), lush and rigorous in color, his cutouts are among the most admired and influential works of Matisse's entire career. They belong with the grandest affirmations of the élan vital in Western art."

LACMA: MATISSE COLOR

Love the new Matisse On Paper Exhibit at LACMA! The colorful graphic forms are super inspiring!

According to the LACMA Press Release, "Late in his career, Matisse systematically developed a technique in which he cut vibrantly colored papers into organic shapes and then arranged them on his studio’s wall. This method gave the artist the creative freedom to combine his views on form, color, plane, and space.  Matisse reflected on the immediacy of the cut-out medium in 1951: The cut-out paper allows me to draw in color. It is a simplification....It is not a starting point but a culmination. He later added, The cut-out is what I have now found the simplest and most direct way to express myself.
