DE YOUNG: GAULTIER POP

One of the final rooms of the massive Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition featured a futuristic metropolis theme for its couture garments. Patterns become optical illusions, playing with our perceptions of the body and the dress. In one elaborate design, as a subversive approach to fashionable cinematography, a billowing skirt is even constructed out of fabric film strips.
