CLE TILES: MOROCCAN INFLUENCE

Clé, the modern shopping experience for tiles, was my favorite find at the Remodelista Holiday marketplace. Cle offers unique tiles created by impassioned artists & artisan studios and classic tiles designed to form heirloom surfaces.

3 times a week

As I hit the 2 year mark for BigBrightBold I wanted to take a few moments to thank all my loyal readers, old and new. Writing and photographing on this blog is definitely a labor of love, and I enjoy all of it! I love photographing the stores, meeting the creatives and documenting all the  big, bright, and bold inspiration.

But, the days seem to be getting shorter with all the projects I am trying to juggle. What should be fun, sometimes becomes another late night task. No longer a labor of love, it becomes just labor. And, that was never my intention in starting this creative outlet. My responsibilities as Art Director of Postmark have grown, and I don't have enough time to dedicate to my own art. So, as one of my main New Year resolutions, I will dedicate more time to making. This means I will have to cut back on the blog to three days a week. I still have tons of fun posts planned, but now plan to write and post on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. If inspiration strikes, I might post a bit more. But, I definitely want to keep everything fresh and fun. Fewer, but better, will be the goal. So, although I am definitely not a minimalist, less (maybe, just maybe) can be more. More time for doing, more time for painting. More time for friends, and more time for yoga. Here's to a 2014 filled with more!

DEBORAH SUSSMAN LOVES LA

Finally got the chance to visit WUHU Gallery's Deborah Sussman Loves LA retrospective. This was the first retrospective of Deborah's early work, including projects completed while she was at the Eames Office up to the 1984 Olympics.

I worked at Sussman/Prejza as my first job out of grad school, and Deborah continues being an incredible mentor for the bright and bold. According to the kickstarter campaign homepage, "From her years with the Eames Studio in the 1950s and 1960s, her partnership with Paul Prejza and the incorporation of Sussman/Prejza in 1980, to the creation of the iconic identity and “pop-up” architecture for the 1984 LA Olympics, Deborah Sussman has helped shape the visual landscape of Los Angeles and define the field of environmental graphic design. Deborah has worked at the intersection of graphic design and the built environment for more than 60 years. She has created striking visual imagery and devised its imaginative application for architectural and public spaces both permanent and temporary. Throughout her career Sussman has claimed an ever more expansive role for graphic design in the urban landscape. Sussman uses graphic design to emphasize aspects of the built environment and to provide rich connections to the communities and cultures in which it will participate."

DEBORAH SUSSMAN: WUHU  GALLERY

A recent piece about Deborah Sussman's show at the WUHU gallery claims "Deborah Sussman gets what she deserves." And, I could not agree more.

I had the amazing fortune of working with Deborah for a year and a half, and she continues to be a tremendous inspiration. She is a true graphic visionary in the mostly male dominated field of architecture, and it's interesting to see a show that displays her early works. Deborah is "recognized as a pioneer of environmental graphic design for creating arresting visual imagery and designing its highly imaginative applications for architectural and public spaces. Deborah's passion for the marriage of graphics and the built environment began during her time at the Eames office and has since led to collaborations with planners, architects and clients."

The exhibit displays everything from original sonotubes from the 1984 Olympics environmental graphics program to paper bags for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The exhibit is as exuberant and bold as Deborah herself.
