MCASD: TIJUANA ARTISTS

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is always one of my favorite stops when in Sa n Diego. On our last trip down south (See Mixture here and Pigment here) I hopped over to see the exhibit at MCASD. I love the interior of the museum, which takes advantage of the refurbished train station turned art gallery.

According to the Exhibit description, "The Very Large Array nods to the vast spectrum of objects assembled in MCASD’s collection and to the ability of artists to connect us to something much larger than ourselves. Featuring more than one hundred artists and representing five decades of collecting, this expansive exhibition of Museum acquisitions highlights many of the region’s most beloved and accomplished artists." It is a well curated exhibition of Mexican artists, the two dimensional pieces hung in a salon-style installation.

EXPLORATORIUM: INTERACTIONS

My favorite exhibit at San Francisco's Exploratorium was the video wall. It mapped people's movements into color and form, transforming the mundane into art. The outcome - a bold screen tracing the visitors to the museum - was a striking display!

EXPLORATORIUM: OUTSIDE IN

The new building of the San Francisco Exploratorium is focused on the science, but still takes advantage of its gorgeous location on Pier 15. As the sun peered down on the blue waters of the bay, we were fortunate for a break in the normal summer fog. It doesn't get better than sitting on the museum terrace, enjoying cappuccinos and vistas. I love the museum's screen wall, scientific patterns becoming art.

EXPLORATORIUM: LEARNING LABORATORY

Got the chance to visit the new Exploratorium in San Francisco over the weekend. It's the museum of science, art and human perception, an inspiring place to visit for adults and kids alike. The exhibits break down complex scientific phenomena into digestible, physical experiments. We played with shadow photography, writing our names backwards through a mirror, memory games, and building light sculptures.

According to the musuem, "The Exploratorium is a twenty-first-century learning laboratory, an eye-opening, always-changing, playful place to explore and tinker. For more than forty years, we’ve built creative, thought-provoking exhibits, tools, programs, and experiences that ignite curiosity, encourage exploration, and lead to profound learning."

EXPLORATORIUM: REFLECTIONS

As part of the summer EXPLORING series on BigBrightBold, I wanted to shift the focus away from inspiring boutiques and products to inspiring places and museums. Living in LA and visiting San Francisco, I sometimes take for granted the plethora of incredible museums the cities have to offer. We have modern art, modern cooking and modern science, right at our fingertips. The only thing we don't have is unlimited time to visit every one of them: MOCA and LACMA, the Getty, the DeYoung. People travel from all around the world to visit these iconic institutions. Sometimes, a beach day is in order, but other times I need to buckle up and head for a museum visit. Looking forward to the James Turrel show in LA.
