REFORM SCHOOL: PERFECT FINDS

Every time I visit Reform School I discover bold new art and talented new artists. This time I discovered a vintage fashion boutique as well. Founded by two high school friends who always dreamed of opening their own shop, this Silverlake hot spot has an incredible well curated and totally unique selection of home goods, art, fashion and gifts. While I was shopping, a guy gushed over the perfect house warming present for his artist friend: a table top loom that was already set up for DIY weaving greatness. The shop is perfect for serendipitous discoveries, from wool weaving looms to Ryan Gossling coloring books and quirky, custom nude portraits.

BOLD STREET ART

I love it when layers and layers of torn posters become art. I discovered this colorful street art when strolling Sunset Boulevard last weekend. The bold strokes evoke the Abstract Expressionist masters.

LAWSON FENNING: EYE FOR DETAIL

Lawson-Fenning furniture takes its cues from vintage pieces, but combines new forms and materials to give each piece a modern spin. Combining the principles and craft of mid-century Californian and Scandinavian design with traditional details and modern styling, the pieces follow a line of thinking that furniture should be well-crafted, beautiful, and above all, useable in a variety of interior styles. The pieces feel timeless and mix well with vintage finds.

LAWSON FENNING: ECLECTIC HOME

One of my favorite shops in Silverlake might not be filled with hot pink and orange, but it is, neveretheless, striking and bold. The grays are alluring as are the textured, rich woods.

The concentration of the Lawson-Fenning line is on craft, versatility, and timelessness in every piece. All pieces are made in Southern California using high quality materials and sustainable woods. Lawson-Fenning's mid-century and vintage pieces are chosen with a curatorial eye that favors the best from Californian to European 20th century design. I like the mix of indian patterned rugs and poufs against the wooden furniture.

BELDI: MULTICOLOR RUGS

Hosting the dinner party got me in the mood to redecorate. As I told stories about my favorite travel mementos - my woven aboriginal art pillows from the Outback, my Kilim rug from Essaoira, my leather poufs from Fes - I was inspired to search for additional Moroccan handicrafts. Wish I could get these gorgeous, textured Boucherouite rugs.

"Boucherouite" translates in Moroccan to something close to "king of the leftovers." These energetic and eclectic free form rag rugs hand-woven by tribal Berber women from discarded scraps and recycled fabric and materials combine abstract art with ingenuity and resourcefulness. Each carpet is a truly one-of-a-kind and unique work of art. As a recent article in the New York Times stated, "They seem more suitable for framing than trampling underfoot."
