COLLAGE WITH CARIS: BRAVE NEW WORLDS

Along with being inspired by such great source imagery, the best part of attending the collage class was getting inspired by the creatives around me. After focusing on my own art, I walked around the room and glanced at the creations people had conjured up. The collage worlds were diverse: the combinations were funny, beautiful, and sometimes strange. Cactuses were cut into lavish lanscapes while cops were glittered up with lime green glasses. What a fun night!

Collage is a tricky art. It all comes down to getting inspired by the right images and creating fun juxtaposition of cut out paper. Saturday's workshop Collage with Caris was the perfect way to dip our toes into the world of collage.

Caris brought a colorful collection of vintage ephemera, and all we have to do was look through the piles and select our favorites. Somehow I ended up choosing a bunch of vintage flowers, women, butterflies and landscapes to start my pieces. Not sure what that says about me, but it was fun pairing flowers and ladies into magical, if strange, new worlds.

Platform, the creative studio in Highland Park, offers classes in addition to selling gorgeous wares. I took a Shibori workshop a few months ago, and recently received an email for a collage night. Caris Reid, a New York painter and artist, began hosting workshops a year ago and I was excited to join her in LA.

Saturday's Collage with Caris was the perfect kick off to my longtime goal of making collages with retro photos. Collaging, wine, snacks and new friends made for a perfect Saturday night! The class included a carefully curated selection of vintage magazines from the 60's, 70's and 80's as well as a generous supply of beautiful papers, scissors and glue. Thanks to Caris, we were very inspired to create fun works of art.
